What is Last Looks?

The Last Looks Student Film Festival was created in 2019 as a way to showcase the work of students in Oglethorpe’s newly-developed Film and Media Studies Major. There was a temporary hiatus during the COVID-19 Pandemic, but this year’s festival is the fifth consecutive festival and the sixth festival overall.
Each year, the festival includes a red-carpet screening event to showcase all accepted films, as well as an opportunity to network with industry professionals. The festival is open to all current Oglethorpe students, regardless of major, and participants are invited to submit films in four categories: promotional, experimental, documentary, and narrative. Judges select the top film from each category and each winner receives a prize. In addition, the festival judges are all members of the Atlanta film community, making it a great opportunity for students to have their work seen by potential future employers—and a chance to win cash prizes!
Festival winners also have the opportunity to present their work as part of a featured panel during the annual Liberal Arts and Sciences Symposium (LASS). These sessions are intended to provide a space to screen the winning submissions, and to offer the filmmakers an opportunity to discuss the creative process. A central component of the dialogue focuses on the use of multimedia storytelling to present complex ideas about identity and culture in engaging ways.
The sixth annual OU Student Film Festival, “Last Looks,” will be held on Friday, March 20th at 7:00 pm in Lupton Auditorium. Last year for the first time, we offered students the opportunity to submit early and receive feedback/guidance from faculty, as well as the opportunity to then incorporate that feedback and resubmit. We are prepared to do the same this year–the Early Bird Submission deadline is 5:00 pm on Tuesday, December 2nd.
The regular deadline for submissions is 5:00 pm on Thursday, January 22nd. We encourage all OU students to take advantage of this opportunity to showcase their talents!
